Sacramento, CA – Long Beach, CA

B.A. in journalism with a minor in International studies

A multimedia journalist with a passion for using storytelling as a tool for empowerment.

I’m Kelsey Brown, a freelance journalist based in Sacramento, California who is passionate about storytelling and social justice.

I am a media and research lead at Equality Bahamas, a nonprofit organization that promotes women’s and LGBTQIA+ rights. I create content for and manage our social media, edit videos, and help organize and edit policy proposals.

I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in International Studies from California State University, Long Beach in 2022. From March through July, I was a press fellow with Outfest Los Angeles, the largest LGBTQ+ film festival in the world. I covered films, like Chocolate Babies, Malcom Kenyatta’s historic run for Senate and House of Tulip, that highlight queer, Black, and brown narratives of reclamation and resilience.

As a freelance journalist, I write for publications like Insider, Bluedot Living magazine, and CinéSPEAK, on topics ranging from culture and entertainment to health and environment. My profiles are diverse, reporting on Indigenous activists who work to restore and return ancestral remains to a scholar who overcame addiction and incarceration. My goal as a journalist is to uplift marginalized experiences and to empower people through stories and facts.

I’m seeking opportunities that challenge me to grow and explore. I am always looking to expand my skills and to become a more thoughtful and impactful person and professional.
